Microsoft is implementing security enhancements for Outlook. They will discontinue support for Basic Authentication for Outlook personal accounts on September 16th and remove the light version of the Outlook web application on August 19th. Additionally, Gmail accounts will no longer be supported in Outlook.com by the end of the month.
Users of Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live.com will need to use apps that support Modern Authentication from September 16th onwards. Third-party email apps that do not utilize Microsoft’s login prompt will be unsupported later this year. Microsoft aims to notify affected users by the end of June, providing guidance on adjusting app settings or re-adding accounts using OAuth2 authentication.
Regarding Gmail integration, Microsoft will no longer allow consumers to access Gmail accounts in Outlook.com, although the new Outlook for Windows app and Outlook for Mac will still support Gmail accounts.
Microsoft is also transitioning Windows Mail and Calendar users to the new Outlook for Windows app before discontinuing support for the built-in Windows Mail and Calendar apps.
Furthermore, the light version of the Outlook web app, designed for older browsers, will be removed on August 19th. Microsoft advises users to use the latest versions of supported browsers to access Outlook.com after 2024.
Minimum browser requirements for Outlook.com include Microsoft Edge or Chrome version 79 or later, Firefox version 78 or later, Safari version 16 or later, and Opera version 76 or later. Windows 10 or later and Windows Server 2016 or later are the supported operating systems, while Linux versions of Firefox and Chrome, as well as macOS Sonoma, Ventura, and Monterey, will still have access to the mail service.
